Wood flooring´s equilibrium

Wood flooring will look and perform best when the interior living environment is controlled to stay within a relative humidity range of 40-60% with a temperature range of 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit. This happens to be about the same range that most people are comfortable at.

The chart below indicates the moisture content that wood will likely have at any given combination of temperature and humidity. You will see that 6-9% equilibrium moisture content is in the recommended temperature and humidity range (shaded area).

Although some movement can be expected even between 6-9% moisture content, wood can expand and shrink dramatically outside that range. Under 40%, the joints between the boards will form gaps, and over 60% humidity the boards will swell, and could possibly cause damage.
